Solar in Sacramento

SolarAPP+ is Sacramento's automated route for solar on one- and two-unit homes and ADUs. It's open only to registered contractors and runs through the city's Public Permit Portal, and the residential solar page says a SMUD interconnection letter is uploaded with the application. Anything outside that route goes to the Building Division as solar plans. The city bills its own permit fees apart from the SolarAPP+ processing fee and prints no solar permit amount, so ask the Public Counter at 916-808-5318 what your system will be charged.

The city requires a virtual inspection for Solar/PV work. A request made before 6:00 p.m. is scheduled for the next work day, and a later one two working days out. The state's service-area layer places the center of Sacramento with SMUD, a publicly owned utility district, and shows PG&E at the edges, so check which name is on your bill. SMUD's battery page says the upfront incentive dropped from $500 per kWh (up to $10,000 per household) to $300 per kWh (up to $6,000) effective Sept. 23.

The higher amount needed an interconnection submission by Sept. 22 and enrollment by Dec. 31, 2026, and customers must enroll within 90 days of permission to operate. California puts a Solar Energy System Disclosure Document on the cover page of every solar contract, in 16-point bold type, with the total cost including financing. If the quote includes a battery, ask whether that total counts SMUD's $300 rate or the old $500 one.

What solar costs near Sacramento

No installer has quoted us a Sacramento job, so this page gives no city price. The California page lists the estimates with what solar installers are paid ($30.42 an hour in the BLS wage data, which is pay, not price) and the utility application fees. How we estimate costs.

Licenses and permits for solar in Sacramento

In California a solar system goes on a house under a CSLB license: A, B, C-10 Electrical or C-46 Solar. Under Gov. Code 65850.5 the city or county approves a residential solar permit administratively, and under Gov. Code 66015 its fee is capped at $450 plus $15 per kW above 15 kW unless it adopts a written finding. The utility's interconnection application comes on top of the permit.
