What an inverter swap involves in Florida
An inverter converts the panels' direct current to household power, and replacing one means working on the wiring that feeds your panel. Section 489.105(3)(o) names replacement among a solar contractor's services, next to installation, alteration, repair, maintenance and relocation, and a contractor in another Chapter 489 category may work within that category's scope. Ask for the license number and category, and check them with DBPR.
Section 489.113, as the statute reads, says a solar contractor needn't subcontract minor electrical work within its scope when the work exclusively pertains to residential solar equipment.
Florida inverter prices, string and micro
A string inverter is $1,225 to $3,275 per string inverter, installed in the model, and the table adds a per-microinverter row. One national range is the base, widened 15 percent each way and multiplied by Florida's solar installer wage ratio of 0.95. It holds no permit fee and subtracts no federal credit, which makes it an estimate and not a quote.
The unit and the labor to fit it are in; a battery, wiring repair or panel upgrade aren't. Check whether removing the old unit and any monitoring gateway is in the price.
| Item | Figure | What it is |
|---|---|---|
| Estimated range, not a quote | $1,225 to $3,275 per string inverter, installed | Built from one national published range, adjusted by the Florida solar installer median wage ratio (0.95). Before any incentive: there is no federal credit for a system installed in 2026. Basis: no Florida company price for this job, so the national estimate stands. |
| Estimated range per microinverter, not a quote | $120 to $385 per microinverter, installed | Built from one national published range, adjusted by the Florida solar installer median wage ratio (0.95). Before any incentive: there is no federal credit for a system installed in 2026. Basis: no Florida company price for this job, so the national estimate stands. |
| Solar photovoltaic installer wage, Florida median | $24.30 an hour | Installer pay from O*NET's 2025 median (BLS May 2025 data); the company sets your price. |
Estimated range. Built from national published ranges (1 source), adjusted by Florida's solar installer median wage ratio to the US (0.95, BLS May 2025), plus the city solar permit fee where the city publishes one. Not a quote. One Florida installer publishes its own current price on its own page (Palmetto, per watt), too few to build a range from; the others print blog or market averages or dated figures, which we do not count. We have no Florida company price for this job, so the range is our national estimate alone. Full method. Prices as of Oct 24, 2026.
What your utility prints about equipment and size
Tampa Electric requires a visible load-break manual disconnect, and FPL pre-approves a system before installation. FPL's Tier 1 is 10 kW AC or less, and Rule 25-6.065 puts anything over 10 kW into Tier 2, where FPL charges a $400 application fee and Tampa Electric $250. Ask the company whether the replacement changes your system's AC rating.
Duke Energy Florida's own site doesn't post a residential equipment or interconnection page, so ask Duke whether a new inverter needs review before the old one comes off.
Sales tax and the assessment
Section 193.624 lists inverters among the parts of a renewable energy source device whose just value isn't counted in a residential assessment. Section 212.08(7)(hh) exempts solar energy systems and their components from sales and use tax, with the Florida Solar Energy Center certifying the list of equipment to the Department of Revenue, so ask the seller whether the replacement unit is on that list.
Permit and warranty papers
Ask the building department whether a swap needs an electrical permit; section 553.79 has each agency set its own fees and post its application types online. Find the failed inverter's warranty papers and installation date before you pay for a replacement.
What can't wait with an inverter
- Call 911 for smoke, flame, sparks or a hot casing that smells of burning at the inverter, and keep people back.
- The inverter shows an error light, with no burnt smell or scorch marks.
- The inverter has stopped reporting to the app.
What to note down before you call
- From the ground, copy the make, model and serial number off the inverter label.
- Write down the error code and the date production stopped.
- Find the warranty papers and installation date.
Permit and utility steps for an inverter swap
Ask your building department whether a like-for-like swap needs a permit, and ask your utility whether it wants notice.
Ask for the company's contractor license number and look it up with your state's licensing board before you sign.
Questions people ask
Who's allowed to swap a Florida inverter?
A contractor holding a DBPR solar license, or another Chapter 489 license for work inside its scope. Section 489.105(3)(o) names replacement among a solar contractor's services.
Does Tampa Electric have an equipment requirement?
Yes, a visible load-break manual disconnect. Ask the company whether the replacement keeps the existing disconnect.
Does a bigger inverter change my tier?
It can, because Rule 25-6.065 sets Tier 1 at 10 kW or less. Tier 2 runs from more than 10 kW to 100 kW, with application fees at FPL and Tampa Electric.
Is a replacement inverter taxed in Florida?
Section 212.08(7)(hh) exempts solar energy system components from sales and use tax. Ask the seller whether the unit is on the Florida Solar Energy Center's list.
