Solar in Grand Rapids

Grand Rapids prices the electrical side of a solar job on its FY2027 Planning, Design and Development fee schedule, effective July 1, 2026. It charges $42.00 for an alternative power system and its first 10 kW, then $4.00 for each additional kW. That's only one of two permits. A rooftop system also needs a building permit, which the city prices by project value and figures with its fee calculator. The Development Center's number, per the city's page, is 616-456-4100.

Grand Rapids is Consumers Energy territory on the MPSC map, the only electric utility placed there, though border streets should check their address with Consumers (800-477-5050). Its distributed generation program credits the excess you export at the power supply rate including transmission, and since February 27, 2024 those credits apply to all electric charges. The application review fee is $50, paid to Consumers and not to the city. So a complete Grand Rapids quote carries three separate charges outside the installer's own price: the electrical row from the schedule, the building permit from the calculator, and the utility's review fee.

What solar costs near Grand Rapids

We haven't collected solar quotes from Grand Rapids, so this page gives no city price. The statewide estimates are on each service page, and the Michigan page lists them with what solar installers are paid ($24.29 an hour in BLS data for May 2025, which is pay, not price), the printed city permit fees and the utility application fees. How we estimate costs.

Licenses and permits for solar in Grand Rapids

MCL 339.5737(1) requires a license for the business of electrical contracting, and the Act's definition of electrical wiring covers generating equipment, so ask the installer for its electrical contractor license number. The utility's interconnection application is a separate filing from the city permit.
