Solar in East Lansing
East Lansing bills a solar job on two permits. The electrical fees list "Solar Panel Modules, each" at $12. On the building side the solar permit application fee is $60 and non-refundable, and "For systems under 10kw (app, rough & final inspections)" the charge is $140; larger systems are "Based on value of construction." A solar permit "also requires an electrical permit," the city's pages say. You'll reach the building department at (517) 319-6810, per the city's project chart.
Historic houses have an extra step. The Solar Permitting Checklist requires a Certificate of Appropriateness in the Historic District and zoning compliance with section 50-156 of the city code. East Lansing is split between the Lansing Board of Water & Light and Consumers Energy. BWL covers the west and center on the MPSC map and Consumers the east edge, so check your address with BWL or Consumers. Customers on BWL can get $500 per kW, up to $2,000. If your house is in the Historic District, the Certificate of Appropriateness is the paper to ask the installer about first.
