What does a ground-mounted solar system cost in Michigan, and what permits does it need?

Short answer

A ground mount costs more than a rooftop system in our model, and its permit path differs too: the residential code's PV rule is written for roofs, and as one city's checklist reproduces the code, ground mounts follow local fire separation. The utility rules are the same as for a roof. No federal credit applies to a system installed in 2026, so the contract price is the price you pay.

Is a quote worth getting yet?

Check these before you send the form.

  1. Smoke, a burning smell or fire at the inverter, the panels or the wiring? Call 911.
  2. Will the roof need replacing while the panels are on it? Taking panels off and putting them back is its own job with its own cost, so the quote isn't worth getting yet.
  3. Is most of the roof shaded for much of the day? Then hold off, because heavy shade is a reason a quote isn't worth getting yet.
  4. Does a pitch promise no electric bill, free solar or no upfront cost? Ask for the total price including financing in writing, and don't sign before you have it.
  5. None of those, and you want a price for panels, a battery or a repair? The normal form is fine, and the quote guide lists what to compare.

A yes to the first question means calling 911 first. If it's the second or third, settle the roof or the shade first, and if it's the fourth, ask for the total price in writing before you agree to anything.
