Solar battery storage in Detroit, MI

Short answer

A battery in Detroit has to be named in its DTE application as import-only, export-only or no-exchange, and changing the mode later means a new application.

What to watch for in Detroit: BSEED's $165 and $278 per-visit inspection rows, the state license question for Detroit trades, and DTE's $50 application.

Detroit particulars

Detroit's Buildings, Safety Engineering and Environmental Department (BSEED) bills solar by the inspection visit. Its fee schedule, effective January 1, 2024, lists $165 per visit for a system with no utility-grid connection and $278 per inverter connection per visit for one tied to the grid, and each later installation inspection visit is $176. Because the grid-tied line counts inverter connections, ask how many your plan has. BSEED's number, per the city's page, is 313-224-2372.

Detroit licenses its own trades, too. LARA says Detroit issues its own licenses and registrations, so ask BSEED whether a state electrical contractor license is enough before anyone starts. Only DTE Electric (800-477-4747) has territory on the MPSC map that reaches Detroit, though your address is still worth checking with DTE. Under its Rider 18, power you draw is charged at the retail rate, power you send out is credited at the power supply rate, and the excess goes into a bank whose credits don't expire and can't be withdrawn.

DTE's Level 1 or Level 2 application is $50. BSEED's per-visit charges are the city's, separate from the installer's price, and the quote you accept should list them on their own lines.

Solar battery storage in Detroit: what to know

DTE also wants the battery to meet its certification and interconnection requirements, with spec sheets sent along. It doesn't treat a battery as a generator. That keeps storage out of the 110 percent sizing limit, as long as adding it doesn't raise what the system can generate or export in a year. DTE is Detroit's utility on the state's territory map, so check your address with it first.

BSEED's pages don't say whether a battery needs a permit of its own, so put that question to the office (313-224-2372, per the city's page) before the work is scheduled.

Permits for solar battery storage in Detroit

The 2023 National Electrical Code has been Michigan's electrical code since March 12, 2024, and LARA sends residential requirements to the Michigan Residential Code.

When to call 911 and when it can wait

Call right away
  • Smoke, a burning smell or fire at a battery, inverter, panels or wiring is a 911 call. Leave the equipment alone.
Can usually wait
  • The neighborhood is out of power and your panels with no battery are off, which is how grid-tied inverters are built to behave.

What to settle before you buy

Try this first: ask the installer which mode the battery will run in, and have that mode written into the application.

  1. Decide what you want backup power for: a few circuits or the whole house.
  2. Ask whether the battery is priced inside or on top of the solar quote.
  3. Get the capacity in kWh, the warranty and the make and model in writing.
  4. Look up the company's electrical contractor license number with LARA.

What solar battery storage costs

The estimate below is the Michigan-wide one, adjusted for Michigan wages and not for Detroit in particular. The same table is on the solar battery storage page. How we estimate costs. Prices as of Oct 23, 2026.

How we estimate costs: the Estimated range row comes out of a model, so treat it as a planning figure and never as a quote. It takes 2 published national ranges for this job (cost guides from third-party sites that we haven't verified and don't cite) and multiplies them by Michigan's solar installer wage ratio to the US (0.87, BLS May 2025). The range is before any incentive: the federal residential clean energy credit does not apply to systems installed after December 31, 2025. The wage and permit rows are what installers are paid and what the city charges, and neither is a price. We have not collected quotes, and too few Michigan installers publish prices to show a range. Questions about solar battery storage

Will my solar panels work in a Michigan power outage?

Not without a battery, because grid-tied inverters shut off in an outage. The MPSC's consumer tips say backup power needs a battery.

Is there a tax credit or rebate for a home battery in Michigan?

Not a federal one for a battery finished in 2026. The Residential Clean Energy Credit ended for expenditures made after December 31, 2025, and installation completion is what counts.

Does a battery let me go off the grid?

Consumers Energy warns against claims that you can be independent of the grid, and says customers still have a bill for fixed charges.
